Our Approach

Healing that’s experiential, relationship-based, and hands-on

At SRD Straightening Reins, we believe growth happens through experience, not lectures, labels, or pressure. Our programs use equine-assisted, experiential approaches to support emotional regulation, confidence, responsibility, and connection.

Whether someone is caring for the herd, participating in a structured learning session, or engaging in individualized support, each program is designed to meet people where they are and help them build skills that last beyond the ranch.

What is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)?

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is therapy through horses that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Rather than focusing only on talking, EAP uses hands-on interaction with horses to help individuals explore emotions, practice coping skills, and build insight in real time.

Because humans learn best by doing, experiential approaches like EAP can create deeper understanding and longer-lasting change.

The EAGALA Model at SRD

SRD Straightening Reins is EAGALA-certified and follows the EAGALA Model for equine-assisted psychotherapy and personal development.

The EAGALA Model is:

  • Client-centered
  • Solution-oriented
  • Evidence-driven

This model creates space for individuals to reflect, make connections, and discover their own solutions, supported by trained professionals and the natural responsiveness of horses.

Because insight is experienced both intellectually and physically, learning tends to be more

Why Horses?

Horses offer something unique in the healing and learning process.

As intuitive, highly perceptive animals, horses respond to nonverbal cues and emotional states in real time. They don’t judge, label, or shame, they simply react honestly. This makes them powerful partners for building self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and trust.

Equine-assisted work is engaging, embodied, and immediate. Lessons learned alongside the herd are felt, not just understood, helping participants practice new ways of relating to themselves and the world around them.

SRD is proud to be EAGALA-certified and to follow the internationally recognized EAGALA Model for equine-assisted psychotherapy.

As the global standard in the field, EAGALA ensures that therapy is delivered by a licensed mental health professional and a certified equine specialist working together. This model provides a structured, ethical, and research-informed approach to supporting youth and families.
